Abstract	英語辞典の最高峰「Oxford English Dictionary (略称OED)」(オックスフォード英語辞典)は、本編12巻補遺1巻として1933年に刊行された。本印刷原版は、その第12巻「W」の項、見出し語「with」のうちの1ページに相当するものである。本辞典は当初、「A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles (略称NED)」の名称で、1884年から1928年に125分冊で世に出されたが、その後12巻に再編され、補遺1巻とともに、「Oxford English Dictionary」として1933年に改めて刊行された。さらに1972年から1986年の間に補遺4巻が刊行され、1986年に完成した。100年の歳月を費やした印刷史上に残る大事業であった。全収録語彙数は約48万、引用例180万余、全ページ数は2万ページにものぼる。1933年当時の印刷原版は、1980年代にオックスフォード大学出版局の倉庫で発見されたが、二度の世界大戦を経たこともあり、現存数はごく僅少と考えられる。本印刷原版は、その1枚であり、英国の印刷史上および文化史上、きわめて価値の高いものである。
